News:

This week I continued to focus on the ES Designs web site and our web site tools. I am working toward the ability to automatically archive old web pages. The idea is that everytime I update a page, like this page, the contents of the old news page are automatically moved to an archive where they can be viewed or searched. I have put the together the design for this at the tail end. Here is a list of archived news pages:

Now I just have to complete the scripts to handle the archiving.

In scripting news, Userland introduced a new protocol that lets users download data from web pages directly into their Frontier object database. The protocol, which Userland calls "Fat Pages" allows web masters to incorporate the code for small scripts into the web page. When a user views the page, they can issue a menu command that will import the code directly into their object database. This simplifies the distribution of Frontier scripts.

To use this protocol, you need Frontier 4.2.2 and MS Internet Explorer 3.0.1b1 or later. Users of Netscape Navigator and earlier version of Internet Explorer can access data stored in Fat Pages, but it requires a two step process. First you must download the source data to a file, and then you must read the file into the object database.

To show off how Fat Pages can work, I have added several "webTools" pages to the site. Each page describes a script that I use to help build this site. The pages are also Fat and contain the source code for the scripts that you can download into your Frontier object database. The webTools for Frontier page also contains a traditional ftp link for downloading all of the tools.

It seems that I have been doing more and more web work recently, and less geology. This should be changing in the near future. I will let you know as I get more information. Finally, last week I mentioned a discussion on mobile web servers that I was working on. I have to report that it is still in the works.

Also, congratulations are in order for Toby Leeson & Suzie Warner for giving birth to Eliza Marian Leeson this week. Check out IT'S A GIRL!!! for details.
